Previous studies have shown a relationship between gut peptides and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and gut peptides may have an influence on the function of the brain and central nervous system. Using a functional MRI-based data set of healthy young adults, our findings suggest that 2–3 h after oral consumption of an energy-restricted diet rich in nutrients for brain health, the gut peptides GLP-1 and PYY are both significantly elevated and positively correlated with brain white matter volume (Luvizunas et al., submitted).
